Dear Sir,

I want to draw your immediate attention on the case of a brutal attack on the ” Hatbair Sarbojonin Puja Mondop” in Hatbaria, Goplagonj in Bangladesh. I have visited the place of incident and have found the community to be struggling for security and justice.

Below are the details of the incident. I besiege  you to raise your voices in stopping the minority oppression in Bangladesh.

Back ground information:

Hatbaria is located in the Goplagonj district of Bangladesh. The area is highly Hindu populated. I took it upon myself to analyze the law and order situation of the Thana, upon which I uncovered a horrible picture of minority oppression that has been ongoing in the community through different trends for quite a while.

Incident:

According to Subash Chandra Biswas, secretary of Hatbaria of Sarbojonin Puja Udjapan Committee, on the morning of  the 1-11-08, he found idols in the alter demolished. To his knowledge everything had been fine upon his return home around 11 pm the day before. Upon the discovery he held a council with the local leaders of the Hindu community and officially made a complaint about this shameful, communal, atrocity to the local police station on the same day. However the police waited two days to file a case, doing so on 3-11-08.

Present situation:

As I went to the place of incident on 4-11-08, the local people shared their present situation:

Local Hindu leader Sadan Biswas claimed that he was threatened over the mobile on 3-11-08 by unidentified persons who threated to “slaughter him” if further legal action was pursued over the incident.

Prof. Subdeb Biwas said that never in the past 20 years had the community faced such outright communal attacks.

Recommendations:

Immediate and decisive action is needed by the government and concerned persons to address the situation .

1. Publicly condemn attacks against the Protima (Idol) of “MA DURGA” .

2. Take decisive action to protect members of the Hindu community against attacks.

3. Initiate a full, impartial and independent investigation of the attacks and make the results of this investigation public.

4. Bring to justice all perpetrators of the attacks regardless of their position in society or in any political party.

5. Provide compensation to victims of the attacks.

7. Take appropriate disciplinary or criminal action against any police personnel who have failed to ensure the protection of members of the Hindu community.

The local SP and officer in charge seemed quite hesitant in trying to find out the perpetrators. They are engineering the case to make it it look like a Hindu-on-Hindu conflict even though all evidence disproves such a case.
